The derivation of the word ‘Addiction’ is 'addicene' in Latin which means 'to agree, to hand over'. Also this used to describe a person who becomes a slave. Like this, even though a person starts certain addicted behavior using his or her will, eventually the person becomes its slave.

According to Jung, it is a result from avoiding the pain which one need to properly go through. That is, people might start certain addicted behavior to find comfort and survive but they soon become dominated by self destructing desire through that. In a way, addiction provides thrill, comfort, pleasure and even sense of existence. It seems like god, mother and closest friend. However addiction is like idol worship for the person becomes powerless, naked, and irresistible before the addiction. Therefore the study of addiction can be ‘study about human nature’ and ‘anatomy of human soul’. Addiction is a means to comfort one’s unwanted feelings such as sense of weakness, tediousness, dullness, boredom and powerless, however at the same time it is an act of selling one's mind, soul and body to the materialistic world.
